(Austin, TX) –  An execution scheduled this Wednesday, for a man convicted of killing a young Fort Worth girl is now on hold.

The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals on Friday halted the scheduled lethal injection of 55-year-old Juan Segundo.  Segundo was convicted in 2006 of raping and murdering 11-year-old Vanessa Villa in Fort Worth, 20 years earlier.

It was the second execution the court has stopped this year, and for the same reason.  A U.S. Supreme Court ruling last year invalidated the state’s method for determining if death row inmates are ineligible for execution because of intellectual disability.
