(Huntsville, TX) — A member of the infamous Texas Seven is the 12th inmate to be put to death in Texas this year.

Joseph Garcia was executed Tuesday night in Huntsville for the Christmas Eve 2000 shooting death of Irving Police Officer Aubrey Hawkins during a burglary.  Garcia was serving a 50-year prison sentence for murder when he and six others escaped from the Connally Unit.  After being on the run for about a month, they were captured in Colorado Springs in January 2001.

Garcia is the fourth Texas Seven member to be put to death.  A fifth killed himself in Colorado during the standoff with police.
