(Austin, TX)  —  A Democratic state representative from Houston is pushing a bill to eliminate Confederate Heroes Day as a state holiday.

Jarvis Johnson calls the holiday, which is set on January 19th, “offensive” to people of color, especially since it sometimes coincides with MLK Day.  He disagrees with an Austin Democrat’s bill to rename the holiday Civil War Remembrance Day.

The State Affairs Committee had a hearing on Jarvis’s bill, but didn’t vote on it.
