(Austin, TX) — Governor Greg Abbott is promising Texas is ready for this week’s winter storm.
During a press conference Tuesday, The Governor said the Public Utilities Commission has worked with power companies over the past year to make sure facilities are ready for winter. Abbott vowed more generation will be online when icy weather hits with an excess of 15-thousand megawatts ready for Texans to use.
ERCOT believes there will be near record demand on the grid for Friday morning, rivaling the numbers from last February’s deadly freeze. So far, there have been no calls for conservation.
Millions of Texans were without power for days last February when two winter storms hit. It’s believed almost 250 people died during the storms.
North Texas is under a Winter Storm Watch with the National Weather Service saying up to three inches of snow are possible. Below freezing temperatures are also expected.
